Basuna Mosque … a historical reference to the architecture of Cordoba

The Basuna Mosque  is located in the hot & arid village of Basuna, Sohag, Egypt, over a site amidst a noisy, dusty and densely constructed area with encroaching residential buildings, a cemetery, cattle frequently moving back and forth on the road and a weekly makeshift small market right outside the main entrance of this place of worship posed a major challenge. The new building must offer peace and tranquillity for its users and so a few requirements had to be met.  The solution depends on a cavity-wall with only one window, overlooking the calm cemetery, covered with a hybrid roof system; consisting of a concrete beam gridiron, cast in situ, forming a central square (6.0x6.0m) covered with a main dome, and 108 smaller square openings (0.82 x 0.82m) partially covered using pendentive-domes, complemented with fixed horizontal and operable  vertical glass panels allowing fresh high-altitude northern breeze to filter into the mosque, indirect glare-less sunlight to naturally illuminate the interior, and rain-water to be collected and used for cleaning and watering plants.  The main dome was constructed using an Egyptian-made light block made of sand, lime and air, with a density of 0.5 ton/m3, thermal conductivity 0.136-0.132 W/m2.°K, fire rating (relative to thickness) 4-7 hours, sound insulation (dB) 37-48. The remarkable lightness of the block decreased the building’s own-weight, in turn decreasing the required dimensions of all...

The governorate had concluded a protocol for the revival and restoration of the old village in 2018 with funding from the European Union.  There were about 300 workers from the oasis participating in the restoration of the ancient village, built entirely from the material known as kershif, palm pillars and olive trees. Rufiji Dam Egyptian Projects in the Heart of Africa

Stiegler's Gorge Dam, Rufiji Dam or Nyerere Dam are all different names for one of the largest dams in Africa that is currently being constructed on the Rufiji River in Tanzania with Egyptian arms, a joint venture implemented by a consortium made up of the Arab Contractors and the Elsewedy Electric. The consortium was awarded a tender to establish the hydropower dam on Tanzania's Rufiji River in 2018, provided that the project will be completed and the dam will be inaugurated in 2022. Tanzania Dam from Concept to Implementation The idea of constructing a dam on the Rufiji River in Tanzania dates back to the beginning of the twentieth century. The first study of the dam was conducted in 1940.This study envisaged building a small-sized dam to control floods in the area and protect the irrigation infrastructure.  However, by 1961 the FAO published a study that included the possibility of establishing a larger dam that aims to generate electricity and turn the area into an industrial environment in addition to controlling floods and providing irrigation and drinking water. After the independence of Tanganyika in 1961, President Nyerere saw the hydroelectric dams as an opportunity to develop Tanzania and a move towards industrialization with cheap electricity to get out of the economic crisis. This has prompted him to search for an external source to finance the dam. However, implementation did not take place due to the World Bank's refusal to...
